12+1 Reasons Turning 40 Is the Plot Twist You Needed

Forty is when you realize you’re the adult everyone was waiting for.

Let’s start with a confession. When I turned 39, I had a bit of a crisis... maybe it was the famous midlife one. I had everything that was supposed to make me feel complete: a marriage, a child, a home, a good car. And yet I caught myself wondering, what now? Is there still more to discover in life? I felt stuck for a while, unsure how to handle the thought of turning forty. I remember sitting at a class reunion surrounded by people my age, catching up after years apart. I kept asking them what keeps them going, how they feel about approaching forty. Most of them smiled and said the same thing: just enjoy it. Then something surprising happened. I started to feel genuinely good. Calm, confident, and quietly satisfied in a way I never had before.

  1. I truly do not care what people think anymore.

It sounds like a cliché but it is one of life’s greatest freedoms. I do not filter myself to fit into other people’s expectations. I know who I am, what I like, and what I stand for. That inner calm and confidence are things I wish I had discovered earlier.

  1. Comparison has left the chat

Life is not a competition. Everyone carries a different package, different circumstances, different lessons, different timelines. Some people reach their so called peak early, others later, and some of us might have several peaks at completely unexpected times. And why not.

  1. Fashion and I Are Friends Again

I enjoy fashion again. In my twenties it felt effortless to be stylish, it simply happened without much thought. In my thirties I somehow lost that feeling, I could not quite find myself in what I wore and often felt disconnected from my own look. Now it feels completely different. I follow trends but never in a forced way. I know what truly suits me, what makes me feel confident and comfortable. I am also much bolder than I was five or ten years ago and I love experimenting again. Getting dressed feels creative, personal, and joyful just as it should.

  1. Who Knew Moving Could Feel This Good

About a year and a half ago I began to move regularly and it has completely transformed how I feel in my body. I never thought I would be the kind of person who actually enjoys exercise, but here I am. The difference is not only visible but deeply emotional. My back no longer hurts, my body feels stronger and works the way it should, and I simply have more energy for everything. It proved to me that it is never too late to start something new and to feel good in your own skin again.

  1. Channeling My Inner Grandma in the Kitchen

Cooking has turned into something creative and joyful. I do not need recipes or perfect ingredients anymore, I can simply open the fridge and make something tasty out of whatever is there. I often notice that my hands move the same way my grandmother’s did, calm and sure, with that quiet joy of feeding others. I love cooking for my family and baking for my colleagues, bringing homemade treats to the office. It feels easy, warm, and deeply satisfying every single time.

  1. I enjoy company and solitude equally.

I love spending time with friends and sharing laughter and stories. Yet I also cherish quiet evenings alone with tea and soft music.

  1. Weekends Hit Different Now

I still like a good night out, just not every weekend anymore. Since becoming a mom, recovery takes a bit longer and I pick my parties wisely. But I have plenty of other things that give me a buzz. My flowers, my band, my blog, my cooking, they keep me creative and alive in a different way. Life still has rhythm, it just plays on a cooler beat now.

  1. I am finally doing my bucket list things.

The dreams I once postponed have become real projects. For example, I am part of a band now and that makes me feel both brave and alive. It reminds me that dreams do not expire with age they simply wait for the right time.

  1. I Don’t Want to Be a CEO, I Just Want Balance

There was a time when I thought climbing higher was the only way to prove myself. Now I look at what the so called top looks like and honestly it does not tempt me at all. Endless meetings, constant pressure, late night slides for Monday presentations? No, thank you. I prefer a life that actually feels like mine. My work is fulfilling, my free time is sacred, and my head is clear. That feels like real success, not chasing titles but finding balance and satisfaction in what I already have.

  1. Bridging Generations Like a Pro

I can hang out with people twenty years younger or older and feel perfectly at home. I get the memes, I know the songs, and I can talk about taxes or TikTok with the same enthusiasm. The younger ones probably think I am a boomer deep down, but that is fine, I secretly enjoy shocking them with how much I actually know. Conversations feel richer now because I can see life from so many sides. Age really is just good storytelling material.

  1. Money Well Spent on Me

These days I buy things because I want them, period. No justifying, no waiting for sales, no mental math about whether I deserve it. Last week I saw a 550 euro ring, liked it, and bought it. Same with my 100 euro face serum, it works, I like it, end of story. I do not throw money around, but I enjoy spending it on things that make sense to me. I have my savings, I plan wisely, but there is room for both comfort and spontaneity.

  1. Life Feels a Lot Less Messy Now

Back in my twenties everything was a mess: my hair, my apartment, my makeup, my relationships, even my laundry situation. Pure chaos, but with eyeliner. These days things finally feel more under control. My home is tidy, my schedule makes sense, and I actually know where my favorite jeans are. I have not turned into a neat freak, but I somehow managed to organize both my space and my mind. Let’s just say the outside finally caught up with the inside... and it feels pretty good.

+1 A few years ago my eyesight stopped being perfect, but a good pair of glasses dresses me better than any accessory.
